If a live current line is broken and falls on a railway track, what will happen?

Will the people travelling in the train will be affected ?

If not why....

I need the answer for both the electric train and diesel train....

  1. The tracks are grounded. But, wow-wee! It wouldn't be very pretty. Eventually, someone will fix it.


  2. The line would earth and trip out with no harm done. Diesel trains would be able to pass as soon as the debris is cleared, electric trains would have to wait for the wires to be put back up or be dragged by a Diesel.

    Its an alarmingly common problem on the line between London and Edinbrugh. Partially because of the exposed parts of the line in Northern England, and partially because in an effort to save money on the quieter extremes of the route, the wire supports are spaced further apart then normal.

  3. all current will go to earth and nothing will happen to passengers whatever the voltage may be.

  4. It'll ground out, and no one will be hurt.
