I think the word marriage should stay between a man and a woman. If two guys or two girls want to "become official" there should be another term for it (e.g. civil union).

That's the "slippery slope".  If we allow one form of non-traditional marriage, then where do we stop?  If the concept of "one man, one woman" marriage is invalidated, then what's to say you can't have two spouses?   Or marrying a minor?  Or marrying a goat?

This is why the government should get out of the "marrying" business. They should authorize certificates/licenses (whatever) of union, which would define the legal status of their partner(s) for the purpose of inheritance, power of attorney, etc. That's it!

Then the churches/synagogues/mosques (whatever) can define whether the "union" is a marriage or not within the definition of their theology.

Well, they have to draw the line somewhere.  If we were to let everyone marry everyone.......everybody would be related.  You would have legal issues such as insurance, etc. etc.  I say one partner is fine, man or women.  I don't care about sexual orientation, but I don't believe in polygamy.  There is just to many legal issues to deal with for 3 or more person marriages.
