  1. First of all, strangles is A BACTERIAL INFECTION, NOT A VIRUS. The disease is caused by the bacteria Streptococcus Equi, a close cousin of the same bug which causes strep throat in people. In fact, strangles has often been referred to as the horse's version of strep throat, because the symptoms of the disease are so similar to those typically seen in an infected person.

To answer your other question, no, strangles infection will not stop a mare's esterus cycle. She should still have normal heat periods after she recovers- most mares do.

  2. Strangles isn't a virus...it's a bacterial infection.  If your mare has an active strangles infection it could alter her cycle just as any acute illness can.  If she has been exposed but hasn't shown any symptoms, I don't think it would affect the cycle.  In either case she should be in isolation.

EDIT:  If you mean does it alter it forever, then no.  My answer refers to while the infection is active.

  3. Strangles is a highly contagous virus, and is spread through contact with other horses. (direct and indirect) So if a horse has an out break, separate it immediatly and dont share buckets w/ it and other horses, dont pet it and then pet other horses. Disinfect your boots if you walk in its stall. I think the only way to truly prevent it is to just not share things with your horse and other horses ok? Read this atricle i hope it helps!

ooo my bad starlight 1 is right, its a bacterial infection not a virus. Sorry!
