If someone with an ex-directory number has called you, which "message" comes up:

"the caller withheld their number?"

OR

"we do not have the caller's number to returm the call".

I am trying to work out if someone who says they are ex-directory genuinely is! thanks

  1. Ex-directory (unlisted) is a completely separate issue from whether your number is normally withheld.   You can be ex-directory and have your number displayed on calls, or you can have your number normally withheld but still be listed in the phone book if you wish.

However, if you have BT configure your line to withhold your number by default, then anyone you call who uses 1471 will hear exactly the same thing as if you dialed 141, i.e. "The caller withheld their number."

  2. If they are ex directory their number still comes up unless they have specifically contacted BT to ask for their number to be withheld.  That is unless they dialled 141 before dialing the number.

  3. on my phone they say something like:

"you have called today at 15:00 hours......the caller with-held their number"

    lol

  4. The latter
