Question:

If a parking meter is not working, its saying failed on it, can you still park there with out paying?

  3. If where you are in California is anything like NYC, then the answer is Yes......but only for a certain amount of time.

    In NYC, the parking meters have signs that govern them. They are white background signs with green lettering. In the upper left hand corner of the sign is a green box with a number in it, this number is the amount of time permitted to be parked at the meter.

    If the meter is broken, you are still entitled to that time, but if you're still there after time is up, you can receive a ticket for "Overtime Parking".

    This is a time consuming process for a traffic agent or cop, because they would 1st have to observe your car parked @ the broken meter and then come back after the time frame to see if you're still there.
