If a period is misplaced in your cover letter, does that mean you definitely won't get a call....?

For instance..

"Contact me at hfjdhj@blah.com ."

Notice how the last period is incorrectly placed. Would that SIGNIFICANTLY decrease your chances of getting the job?

  1. Not really. This error shouldn't be repeated again and again though (that'll show your lack of command on the grammatical aspects of the language). Not good impression.

However, slight errors with mechanics are quite acceptable. In all the likelihood, the reader may not even notice  :-)

  2. I wouldn't think so.

  3. You're fine.  That tiny little mistake will NOT significantly decrease your chance of getting the job UNLESS you are applying for a job in an english related field such as publishing, editing, proofreading, english teacher, journalism, etc.

  4. No, I think it would not be a considerable problem.

Somebody could possibly interpret it as a way to avoid internet confusion.  (if they were being generous)

  5. No. Especially not if there are no other errors in the letter or the resume.

And especially not if your skills are in demand.

One thing I look at is the e-mail address. If it is something odd, they don't get hired (e.g. it needs to be professional.)

  6. That's one time where an oddly-placed period might serve you well.  You've made sure that the e-mail address is easy to select, copy and paste.

Depending on the position you're looking for, that might not even be considered an error.  I'm a data systems architect.  I'd still interview you, if the rest of your resume looked suitable.

Grammar errors on resumes and cover letters -- they're a cheap-&-easy way to sort applicants into piles.  Errors that make the reader go Yuck end up placing you in the circular file.  Errors that they don't notice, or that they don't count as errors, mean nothing at all.

At some point, content has to be worth more than style.  As long as your style gets you read from beginning to end, you're doing all right.

  7. Not at all, especially if you displaced the period to activate the html code and make your email address turn into a hyperlink.  I do it all of the time.

    Good Luck
