  1. It's called a screen, or screening. if this is happening, the ref will either identify it and give the other team the point, or he might give a warning. If you see this happening to your team (you are getting screened), tell the ref right away so it can be fixed or your team can be given the point.

    hope i helped!

  2. I know these aren't technical terms, but I would call it good positioning, or blocking. You're doing good if you do that.

  3. It is screening if more than one person is shoulder to shoulder and the ball passes over them from the server. It is a foul and the ref can call it. A single player cannot screen. All you have to do is move slightly to see around one body. It happens most when the serving team is moving front row players around to the speciality positions and they are right next to each so they don't overlap until the ball is served. If the serve goes right over them that can be called a screen...

  4. It's called screening

  5. I'm pretty sure it's called screening.

  6. it's called screening- the team doing it can get called for it- the reff will most likely tell them to separate and not do it again.  but the team who can't see has to call them on it.

  7. Screening!

  8. The above answers are correct.  It is called a screen if a group ofpeople cause the opposing team to not be able to see the ball AND the serve is low and goes over the group.  If the referee sees this, it will be the loss of service for the serving team.  Unless it is blatant, I usually warn first.

It can also be unsportsmanlike conduct.  If the serving team player keeps moving to get in front of a receiving team player, it is unsportsmanlike conduct.  If I think it is blatant, it will be sanctioned as in individual sanction and will be a loss of rally for the serving team.  (Yellow card in USAV, red card in US high schools and US colleges.)

And for the people that say that you HAVE to tell the referee to look for it, that is not correct.  (Have you ever noticed that the team with the lead never asks for the screen call.)  The receiving team does not have the right to stand in one place and make the other team move.  And the serve has to go over and a low trajectory.  The last screen I called was on the team whining about the screen on the other team.  The team that they were complaining about had 3 players switching in the front row.  There was separation and the serve was not going over them.  The team that was complaining had all 5 players grouped with no separation and the serve went low and directly over the group.
