  1. Usually, only legtimate issue succeed. The monarch would have to legally claim the child and Parliament would have to approve. In Monaco, one of the Grimaldis who reined, I think it may have been Ranier's (husband of Grace Kelly)mother,Charlotte, was illegitimate. She was legitimized and became a Princesse de Monaco. So it's possible!

  2. By tradition, common law in England, and the Act of Succession, only legitimate children can succeed to the throne; I suspect that Europe's other monarchies are in a similar position.

  3. Under ordinary succession law, only legitimate descendants can have claims to the throne. For example, in the UK, the line of succession to the British Throne is a partial list of the people in line to succeed to the throne of the United Kingdom. The succession is regulated by the Act of Settlement 1701, which limits it to the heirs of the Electress Sophia of Hanover, as determined by male-preference primogeniture, religion, and legitimate birth. A person born to parents who are not married to each other at the time of birth is not included in the line of succession.

The monarchy of Monaco was also facing "succession crisis", when heir to the throne, Prince Albert remained a "bachelor", but had two illegitimate children by different mothers. Under the succession law of Monaco, only legitimate children can ascend the throne, therefore, although Prince Albert was a father of two, he had to name his sister Princess Caroline of Monaco as his successor, if he does not marry and produce "legitimate children."

  4. The imperial family of Ethiopia claims its origin directly from the offspring of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba who is named Makeda.  In the history of Makeda and her descendants, King Solomon is said to have seduced Queen Makeda, and sired a son by her, who would eventually become Menelik I, the first Emperor of Ethiopia.  And since Makeda never married Solomon their illegitmate son succeeded her.
