  1. The 7 minutes starts the moment the put the eggs into boiling water. I guess it's the same around the world though not places might cook the eggs less than 7 minutes and some more than 7 minutes.

I have never heard of any eggcooker. Cooking egg is a very simple task, i don't see the need for a eggcooker. How will it look like ? I have seen egg peeler though. This is of course for hard boiled eggs

  2. You first prick a hole in the most rounded side (not the pointy side) because it has an air bubble and prevents the egg from cracking. You can use the point of a very sharp knife but we have a device designed to prick a tiny hole in an egg. You bring water to the boil. Once it is boiling you insert the eggs and only then do you start recording the time. 7 minutes will give you eggs that have hard white but runny yolk.

Many people in Germany have an egg cooker. My mother-in-law for instance, has one. It follows the same principles except that steam plays the major role. They normally have space for six eggs. You simply need to insert water, the eggs, set the level you prefer and after a few minutes you get perfectly boiled eggs. I don't use one because it takes up so much space and I do not need YET another electrical appliance. All that wasted energy! There is something rather decadent about using an egg cooker at home.

7 min is the minimum time most people use to boil an egg. It is the standard virtually all over the world.

  3. I cook a "3 minute egg" and a "5 minute egg".

The egg is put into cold water in the pot and brought to the boil.  Then from the time it starts boiling the three minutes are timed. That makes a soft boiled egg, and 5 minutes gives a hard boiled egg.

So, it would seem that there really are many different approaches to boiling eggs.  This link explains it very well.

  4. I bought an egg cooker recently and it works - very hard eggs EVERY time and it takes about 12 minutes to make 7

  5. I would have to consult a cook book to tell you how long to cook an egg, and it depends how you like your eggs cooked.  Start by checking out your most basic every-day cook book.

Regarding egg cookers, yes, there is an amazing variety.  Will give you a link:
