Question:

If a runner is hit by the ball, are they out?

I had a baseball game today and here's what happened...

There was a runner on 2nd, and the batter hits the ball near the shortstop. They were trying to catch it, but the runner went in front of them and the the ball hit the runner.

And then the stupid ump didn't call them out.

I mean, I thought if a baserunner gets hit by the ball, they're out right?

Sorry, this has really been bothering me though...

  1. yes and it would bother me to

  2. yup..bad calll on the umps part

  3. It depends. If the ball has passed an infielder (excluding the pitcher) and no other infielder has a play, the runner is not out. If the ball has touched an infielder (including the pitcher), the runner is not out.

    Otherwise, the runner is out.

In your case, the umpire may not have seen the ball hit the runner (don't tell us you've never made an error), he may have determined the ball had touched an infielder, or he may have determined that the ball had passed the shortstop and that no other infielder had a play.

Bottom line: As for your particular play, none of us was there. All we can do is cite the rule (which most people have not done here).

  4. I believe that someone before me got this (I hope-- I did not read any) but it is interference, runner out, batter credited with a base hit and awarded first base.  Inning over if runner being hit is third out of inning.

  5. Yes, they are out. The umpire must have thought the ball did not hit the baserunner.

  6. Yes, if a  batted ball strikes a runner, he is out, if a thrown ball does, he is safe

  7. If the fielder has a play on a batted ball and it has not been deflected by another fielder and ends up hitting the runner than the runner should be called out, whether is was intentional or not.  If the umpire thinks the runner got hit intentionally he could call a double play.

  8. yes they are out the ump should have called the baserunner out

  9. Yes

  10. They should have been out. Did the ball hit the pitcher's glove first? Or any other player? If so they're safe, if not they're out.

  11. Yes, the runner is out unless they can get out of the way. The ump made a bad call.

  12. Yes, that's a bad call unless the runner was on the bag when he was hit.
