WE have a very old house in town that they want to restore. it is jointly owned by 2 parties, house has been empty for number of years. House needs painting but also checked for structural things. If a volunteer group wants to do this, where does the liability lie with regard to injuries? some of these would be teenagers on high ladders too. Heard there is some kind of bond to release joint owners from liability? If so how does one get it and who has to get it? PLEASE, only replies from those who truly know answer! Thanks.

  1. Volunteering to restore a house? with permission from the owners? For whose benefit? When the house is completed, and it's value has gone up, only the owners could profit from the sale, if that's what they had planned to do with it - OR donate it to some charity - for instance, a homeless family!? Regardles of what state the house is in now, I would say the owners should be carrying some sort of liability on the property. Someone could get hurt, even though they may be trespassing, kids come to mind! But, to be on the safe side, If I was to join the volunteers, I would make sure I had some kind of insurance in case I got injured.  Besides, there should to qualified professionals supervising the job, to make sure nobody got hurt!
