If a white cow mated with a black bull how is it that their calves could turn out a mix of black and white?

Well, it's a math thing. You have to know which genes are dominant and which are recesive, and then you have to know how many calves will be born, and then you can calculate odds of different colour possibilities.

We've learned that in high school, but it was a long time ago...
