Question:

If a window AC unit is not tilted back, what happens to it?

I had a window AC unit installed for almost a week and just removed it from the window to move it to another window. Quite a bit of water spilled from the unit as it was removed and I not realize the tilt was not great enough...

What eventually happens to an AC unit if it is not tilted back and water builds up? Should I be concerned about my unit now being defective or damaged?

Thanks.

  1. You don't have to much to worry about here with your window unit. but it would be better if you had a very very slight tilt downward on the rear (outside ) end. Most of the newer window units can be mounted almost level. and the condensed water that accumulate there in the (pan) section of your unit, is picked up by a "Slinger ring" on the outside blade of your unit and it is slung up on the fins of your outside coil section and is evaporated. This added evaporation of the water as it is on the coil, removes even more heat from your space and blows it and the moisture outside.

Just don't have it tipping downward to the inside and you will be fine. The slight tilt backwards it to compensate for high humidity days when your slinger ring may not disipate all the accumilated water.

  2. No...But u learned that the unit has to be tilted to let water out of the spiget (nipple) to drain the water out.  It is located to the back of the A/C.  It could be plug...with a 1/2" rubber cap.  Take it out.  Thats ur drain plug.

  3. It simply dumps a metric *** ton of water out into your home.  My roommate almost destroyed his floor/our ceiling by leaving it like this for too long.

  4. nothing will happen to it... the purpose is so that condensation will run out of the base pan outside instead of inside the room.. most have a drain hole on the bottom and unless that hole is plugged, then there should not be a problem.. the tilt recommended is very small..

  5. The condensation will not run out like it should.

  6. If it's tilted back now to normal now and you don't have a problem with it, it should be fine. Only thing i could think of that might happen is it might mold in the old water spots. You can take the cover off and clean it(make sure it's unplugged)

If you don't tilt it back to normal it will drain water all over your room and grow mold on the inside.
