Say a pregnant American woman is on vacation in Germany and has her baby..technically, that baby is German and would have to apply for citizenship upon returning to the U.S., right? But what if it's born over international waters on a cruise ship..or any boat...would the baby's citizenship be based on where the mother is from or would it be based on where the cruise ship's registry is..say Norway?? Or since it's international waters..can the mother claim it's citizenship whereever she wants?

I know women aren't supposed to travel long distances if they're in their 3rd trimester..but technically I guess this could happen. I was just curious.

  1. The child would be a citizen of Germany.

  2. The ship is part of the country where it is registered.

Nonetheless, if American citizens are traveling and have a baby, that baby is still a US citizen.  My brother in law's sister was born in Japan because my brother in law's father was stationed there while serving in the US Air Force.  She was born a United States citizen.

  3. I was on a cruise ship and a baby was born the baby was given the mothers nationality despite the ship being registered in a European country and being born in the South PAcific
