Q#2: In the Kinetic Theory of Gases, what does this mean "but having negligible volumes" in the following salient feature?

"The gaseous state is one in which, the molecules are widely separated from one another, but having negligible volumes."

  1. Air isn't a gas... it a combination of different gases like oxygen and nitrogen.

  2. Have you ever seen "dry ice".  This is a gas that is one component of "Air" in solid form.  Solid "air" would not become less visible than "dry ice." Yes, it would be visible.

#2 "Gases can be studied by considering the small scale action of individual molecules or by considering the large scale action of the gas as a whole."1  When describing a gas as a whole compared to the liquid state we might say that there is more volume relative to the same mass.  For the study of individual molecules we use "The Kinetic theory"  This proposes that, " the molecules are very small relative to the distance between molecules."  Another way of saying this is that the "volume" of the molecules is small, (even though the volume of the gas as a whole is larger than in another state.)

I am not sure if they are trying to be confusing or trying to make you think of the distinction.

  3. well for the first queston its visible with oygen it can be compressed into a liquid that is light blue as for the second i am not sure

  4. 1.  If you mean the air that we breathe, yes it is visible.  the hard thing is, is that we could not easily view the conditions in which air would be a solid.

    2.  It just means that gas doesn't have a fixed volume; unlike, solids and liquids.

  5. of course solidified gases are visible. 'Negligble volume' means that although 1 mole of a gas takes up 22.4 L under standard conditions, the sum volume of 1 mole of molecules is very small by comparision. A mole of solid oxygen would probably have a volume of 0.03-0.04 L.
