If all ice melt in north pole, will Earth spin slower ?

Lets take example of an egg, it is hard shell on both top n bottom , built a spinning equipment ..

Try spinning it and take note of the time it started to wobble, draw the graph on spinning velocity vs time.

Now do the same by peeling the hard shells on the top of the egg but do not burst the membran , keep the liquid intact , expose the top membran as much as posible. Then by using the same equipment, spin the egg with the same velocity/force...etc etc.. draw the spinning velocity Vs time graph and compare it with with the 1st..

let everyone know the answer..

** if anyone have big budget, maybe someone can create the same replica model of earth and tested on it ?Please let us knw your finding.. or maybe mad labs can find out.

  1. No, not in any measurable way.  The ice and water would have relatively equal mass.  There might be a bit of water migrating but otherwise it would be the same.  The elevation wouldn't significantly change either.

  2. NO, the Earth will not spin slower. Here's why:

    When something in space is put into motion, it continues in the same direction and velocity until disturbed or altered. There is no friction in Space. The relative speed of Earth and, hehe Earth is Zero. And then there is gravity.  The egg has no gravity. Centrifugal force takes over. I tried to make it simple.

  3. The ice at the north pole is a *very* thin layer compared to the shell of an egg.  When the ice melts, the water is still there.  So the Earth doesn't change its spin at all.

    On the other hand, if the ice in Greenland or Antarctica melted, it would *not* stay there.  It would run into the ocean, and spread around the world.  This would put more mass on the equator and less near the poles.  The Earth would spin a bit slower, maybe the day would be 24 hours and 0.1 second.

  4. No
