Barney is not a dinosaur, he is an evil trans-dimensional creature that feeds off of the emotional energy of small children.  This is why he is not extinct.  

His type of being has evolved an amazing ability to be viewed differently by various humans.   Small children see him as fascinating, Parents view him as harmless, while all other humans react to the sight and sound of him with nausea, headache and disorientation.  

The effects of long-term exposure to Barney have not yet been determined, however...  If he is as dangerous as we suspect, can he be eliminated?  We must start organizing now.
