..then why is it that a politician (Al Gore) is the one that set off the "alarm"?

Wouldn't it mean more coming from a scientist???

They are, but scientists don't get much media exposure.  Just read the IPCC report if you want to know how worried scientists are.

Many scientists have spoken up about global warming, but they do not garner the attention of a recognized politician.

You bring up an interesting point in that society is guided more by those who work in the political machine.  The voices of scientists do not carry the weight with the public to the degree that would be logical.  

You are absolutely correct in that scientist's finding are what is relevant.  Their voices are worth attention.

Most scientists don't believe in Global Warning.  And most of the scientist that do believe are not climatologists.

Fluctuations in global temperatures have been happening far far longer than humans have been releasing "global warming gases".

They have spoken - and they continue to speak.

Politicians know how to get more publicity and attention. People who go into politics "enjoy" presenting an  argument and debating.That's part of their role.

Scientists tend to put their reports into the public domain and believe that is their job done.

They leave it to others to decide on action.

The problem is that many people are just ignoring what's in the scientific reports.

Al Gore is trying to present the information from the scientists to the public.

He's trying to get a groundswell of public opinion because up until now many politicians in the US seem to prefer to avaoid the subject - presumably because they believe they won't be returned to power.

Scientists don't have a medium like Gore does. Gore is famous and wealthy, so he's more inclined to get people's attention.

gores not worried about global warming, hes worried about his career as a politician. ever since he lost the election hes been on a downward spiral, and thought global warming would boost his career. to some extent it did, but it also pissed off an equal amount of people. but like they say, theres no such thing as bad media attention.

See NASA and Bush cover up. Many scientists have spoken up about global warming...but have been silenced by this administration, demoted for their viewpoints, etc.

Most reputable climatologists don't believe in man made global warming and the few that do are not going to get the media attention a prominent politician like AL gore would.

Scientists have warned about global warming for already decades, mostly in the 80's

This lead to the Rio Conference in 1992 which showed a lot of "good will" from all countries not followed by any action.

Unfortunately, it takes the problem to be bigger to be noticed. Since the Rio Conference, emissions have more than doubled.

I agree somewhat with what you are saying.  Unfortunately in "An Inconvenient Truth" Gore was preaching to the choir, and there was too much about his politics in there.

I have never been an Al Gore supporter (I typically vote libertarian, although they are moving too much to the right) but I think he's on the correct side on the global warming debate.  He gets more attention because he was the Vice-President of the United States, and people pay much more attention to people like that than they do to climate scientists. He has gotten most of the science right, but unfortunately there are many people that will ignore it because he's Al Gore and they don't believe anything he says. Those people should just pay attention to the scientists (the real ones, not the 30,000 anonymous hacks that signed some phony petition.)
