That will depend ENTIRELY  on the materials involved.

There are methods going from visual enhanced inspection (AKA Magnifying Lens), X-ray, Dyes, Magnaflux, ans so on.

This is when experience falls in play.  Get a second opinion and if your not sure ground it . The structural repair manual or aircraft maintenance manual will give what you need on how too inspect it.

a suspected damage or crack is checked for confirmation, depth of damage or crack, using High freq. eddy current inspection. check if the damage is within allowable limit or if there is a repair, is it,  as per structural repair manual.
