Well.. if you only have so much room for a given number of individuals (in your case, 1000), by doubling this amount, competition for resources (e.g.: shelter, food) becomes greater increased and naturally, more individuals will die off because they can't meet the requirements to survive (e.g.: too many individuals fighting for too few resources).  The size is at equilibrium again when the number of individuals drops to 1000.
