If an ex still tries to convince you he's only friends with someone else who you think is more, is he lying?

I was with this person for many years, we grew up together and made many mistakes being immature and untruthful. Things ended badly and with time apart it seems to be giving time for growth and maturity. But during a few conversations he's trying to constantly convince and explain he was just friends with a girl he met right after our split and spent a lot of time talking to and who she began to like him. He said when he heard I was talking to someone THEN he allowed himself to start to possibly like this girl. Is he being honest?

yeah he could be being honest. Or he could be lying..who knows..the thing is you all are together and that girl shouldnt matter.

The red flags are popping up like mushrooms after a rainstorm when I hear that one.  I don't find it credible.  Methinks the gentleman doth explain too much, to paraphrase Shakespeare.  People who explain that much, without being asked, are trying too hard and therefore are usually lying up a storm.
