  1. I'm assuming fly fishing... that said, it depends where you are. The insects they eat vary by location. Ask a local what kinds of insects are hatching. When I lived in Montana I liked San Juan worms a lot.

  2. The easiest way to catch them is with bait near the bottom. Generally, Power Bait works the best, though in some places other baits (worms, salmon eggs, etc.) will work better. Rig with a small sinker, a 2 or 3 foot leader (2 pound test or so), and a small (#10 or 12) treble hook. Make a ball of Power Bait around the hook, and cast out. Prop the rod up to hold it still and watch for a twitch when the fish bites. The bait will float up above the bottom, and the trout will gulp it.

If you're using worms, use a small single hook instead of the treble, and pin the worm on 2-4 times, to keep it secure and hide the hook. For salmon eggs, use a small circle hook and embed it inside the egg. For other baits, the idea is the same -- hide the hook inside the bait.

Rainbows also bite lots of different kinds of lures (spinners, spoons, etc.) of 1 to 1.5 inches long. Cast the lure out, let it sink, and wind it in. Experiment with different retrieve speeds and sink times to figure out what works. Try Panther Martin or Rooster Tail or Mepps spinners, or a Hot Shot spoon.

If you're fishing in a stream, cast upstream and wind downstream, just fast enough to give the lure its action. (Fish in a stream expect their food to come flowing downstream, so you'll do better that way than casting downstream.)

Fly fishing also works, but it's harder to learn. With fly casting, you're casting an unweighted lure (the "fly", which is feathers tied on a hook) using the weight of the line.

  3. We had a pond stocked with rainbows that grew to 24 inches. The 2 best things I found were worms(night crawlers) and tiny marshmallows that came in a jar that were orange and flavored. They looked like their eggs. Some we hooked with a spinner.
