can anyone remember a store called Army & Navy where the new police station is, or if not what was it called??

yeah i remember it, it was army & navy,  do u remember the yellow bridge that went across to it?

It was on Chapel Market (number 32, East side of the High Street). The stores still exist elsewhere.

It was first called Cheismans, and then in the mid 1970s it changed it's name to the Army and Navy stores. It was cut off from the precinct that was built in the late 60s so a huge yellow bridge was used to connect shoppers. The bridge was not built there, but brought in on a huge lorry that had to crawl all the way from its destination causing traffic chaos.  

It was a truly independent department store, somewhere where you could get things that were that little bit different. It had an excellent toy department and did wonderful Christmas themes every year with Father Christmas.
