If black isn't a colour, what is it?

My friend told me that what we see as black is not a colour, so what is it?

And no, I am not being racist.

  1. It's absence of light. When you see colors, your eyes receive the light that is reflected from the object you're seeing. "Color" is actually light with a certain wavelength. When your eyes aren't seeing much light or no light at all, you just see darkness or black. Like if you turn off a light bulb inside a room in the middle of the night, it will be dark too.

    Black objects are black because they absorb the light.
