If burning Red Gum Railway sleepers for heating (Cut Up)

a) would the ashes be red in hue?

b) would the ash bucket be Heavy

c) could the hue and weight come from

unburnt Red Soill embedded in the wood?

d) All or mixture of above theories thus far.

Help! Please explain if you can!

  1. a) Only when they're still hot

    b)Yes - if it were cast iron. But an aluminium one would be lighter

    c)You are presuming the previous 2 answers would be positive.

    Railway sleepers make good firewood 'cos they start out very dry and seasoned and are often treated with old diesel to prevent weeds etc growing.

    d)Ashes are grey,buckets start out empty. Hue and weight pre-suppose only a partial incineration of said sleepers.

    Questions and theories are different.


  2. red usually comes from iron so if they are used sleepers then you might be burning the rusted spikes

    red gum is a dense timber and burns to a heavy ash

    red soil      there wouldnt be very nuch soil embedded

  3. Is it not dangerous to burn sleepers cause of chemicals?
