If chickens don't need to mate to make eggs, what's the purpose of roosters?

The chicken, or hen, needs the rooster to fertilise the egg to make the little chicks that we all coo at at easter time.

The eggs that people eat are unfertilized - there was no male, and the egg won't develop into a chicken. For the eggs to hatch, there needs to have been a male involved.

The rooster is to mate with the hen if you want babies.She will lay eggs without him they just wont hatch out babies.The eggs from the grocery store are layed by hens with no rooster.

the roosters fertilize the eggs so you get more chickens. Woman have eggs too but without men you have no sperm and the eggs come out unfertilized during period

Well, you see, the eggs don't have chicks inside. Only when a chicken and a rooster mate can a chick be created. And yes, a rooster is male.

Sorry had to jump in as they answers so far are a little confusing.  Every female's role in reproduction is to produce eggs.  Sometimes they are kept inside like in humans, sometimes they are produced and kept outside to be fertilized by the male like in frogs and sometimes like in chickens, they need to be fertilized inside but are then layed outside the body to be born/hatched.

A hen will produce eggs regardless. This is how they are made.  If the eggs are fertilized while insider her they will hatch into chickens, if they had not been fertilized while still inside her they do not form into anything other than the large single cell that we like to eat.
