If cricket overlaps with nrl and afl-what do aussies prefer to follow and in what order?

I was actually confronted with this decision, Dogs vs Essendon or cricket at the MCG, I decided to go footy :)

I'm not from Australia but I follow the three sports. Cricket is the sport played by all the states during the summer. Between the AFL and the NRL, the leading sport is dependent on which state you live in. In Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania, AFL is the leading sport. In Queensland and New South Wales, NRL would have the edge. It used to be that cricketers played Aussie Rules football to stay fit during winter. Now, you see pro footy players playing cricket during the summer. It's the matter of seasons also. As it gets cooler, cricketers begin to hibernate. AFL is after all played in a cricket oval.
