Dance...sport? a form of art and passion? hobbie? what is it? alot of people (mainly guys, no offence to them) think that dance isnt a sport. For those who think that dance is well pointless i think should participate in a class. for anyone who dances knows how much hard work and trianing goes into it. sure it looks easy but let me tell you. its not as easy as it looks. A majority of dancers are females, but theres are some males....to all the male dancers out there, who dont care what people think about it. i suport you 100% + :P dancing takes alot of courage.

im just woundering though. for those people who dont think of dance as a sport. Then what is it. and dont say a wast of time cuz youll be waisting mine.

  1. I think dance is how you take it. Dancing to put on shows and perform is an art. Competitive dancing has all the ingredients of a sport, albeit one that is artistic.

I suppose we can draw a parallel here - is figure skating a sport? It features in the Winter Olympics, so surely it is?

  2. It's a peforming art

    JG..xoxo

I totally agree with you about male dancers

  3. For some it can be a sport and for others it can't. It depends on the cultural context and the values of the people who are  dancing.

If you look up the word dance, these usualy are the meanings:

"A form of expression using movement"

"An artistic form of nonverbal communication"

"Generally refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music, used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting"

So it seems that dance is a form of art. But sometimes maybe it can be sport.

    Hope it helps =]

  4. AN ART! dance can be classified as a sport, but it is more an art than anything. guys just don't think that dance is a sport because it does not involved a ball, and the guys won't get a lot of girls if the find out that he does ballet, except for maybe the guys at his studio. But i like when guys dance ballet, i think that it shows that guys can do more than through a football and grind (dancing). Heres the thing, if you took a well conditioned dancer, like you or I, to a ballet partnering class and the star football player of a football team heres what would happen: Yeah he will be able to life you up, but can he do it with grace? yeah, he can jump around, but can he did it beautifully? Dancing is hard work, like you said. Not anyone can put on a pair of Capezio pointe shoes and dance around and make it look effotless. You have to have grace, poise, strength, flexibility, and courage. Dance is not a sport, its an art and a passion that most dancers cannot live their life without.

  5. an Art! sports are about winning, where as dance is based on beauty and poise. although dance is sometimes a competition, winning should not be the focus. The Beauty of dance is that it is extremely difficult, and it takes a lot of hard work and courage, but at the same time it must look elegant and graceful. Now can you say that about football? And for those who say that dance is easy, you have no idea. i have played many sports (soccer, volleyball, Tennis) and i consider myself a pretty good athlete, but dance takes the cake for difficulty. We work so hard to gain Strength, Flexibility, and of coarse a great bod. A typical dance class contains a full cardio work out, strength training, and the actual dancing. And finally, if you ever want to test the theory that dance is very defficult, take a dance class yourself, callange a ballet dancer to a push up competition, or watch a movie (i think that center stage does a great job depicting the life of a dancer).

Thanks for the support, and dance is art!

  6. Dancing is most definetly a sport! Just becuz there isnt a ball involved in it doesnt mean its not a sport!

  7. I think it is an art and a sport.

Sport- an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature

    *dance requires skill and athleticism

*and it is competitive..not only is there competition dance..but i know that in my class we are very competitive with eachother.. or what about people in companies their competitive trying to be the best..get the best part

~ I think that dance can be compared to anyother sport there is. It requires skill, concentration, athletic ability. It is hard work..as hard or even harder than "typical sports"

art-  a diverse range of human activities, creations, and expressions that are appealing or attractive to the senses or have some significance to the mind of an individual

    *dance is expressive

*it has significance to the mind of an individual

i really dont think that dance is a form of relaxation..it may be relaxing at times..but i know and im sure many dancers know that it can be stressful.

  8. Dancing is an art. It's not a sport because its purpose is to express feelings and tell stories; sports are about winning and losing.

  9. Dance is both a sport and an art.

Sport, because it requires a TON of athletic ability (strength, flexibility, endurance, etc.) and you compete, as you usually do in sports.

And it's an art, because it's used to express emotions and tell a story.

    So basically, dance is awesome.

  10. dance is a form of relaxation.

from dancing, it helps u to feel better.

  11. well i hae never considered it a sport but ifyou are doig dance routines then yes it is. back in the old days it was exercise to do and it was fun and we all loved it bu then things are different then now.

  12. sport-an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature

it is a sport because you have athletic activity, you use skill, and physical prowess, and in competitions you are competitive. It is a sport, and at the same time it is also an art!

  13. Dancing is both.

It is an art that requires a different form of expression. Socially, it also intrigues many individuals.

It is a sport because it requires a lot of physical activity, technique, and stamina.

If in order for someone to consider anything a sport is based on winning and/or losing, then dancing is also most definitely considered a sport. Ballroom, reality shows, and other dances have plenty of world-wide competitions that require winners and losers. :)

  14. As far as athletic ability it is DEFINITELY a sport. I've been dancing since I was 5 years old and I've done other physical activity as well. And I would have to say that it's one of the most difficult things that I've ever done. I never bother to argue with another "athlete" about it because they usually don't have the first idea about the dedication and hard work that is involved. The only thing I can think of is that it may also be considered an "art" (which is fair enough) because of the level of creativity involved. So it's moreso an "artistic sport", but the physicality of it is just as difficult as any other more common sport like soccer, basketball, golf, whatever...I guess it's considered anti-masculine because you're not mowing somebody down. But I will say this. if it were predominately males in dance, then yes it would probably be considered a sport.

  15. it is an activity.
