  1.   The lighining voltage was beyond the surge protector capacity to prevent the damage.

What was the rating of the voltage surge protctor?

  2. While surge suppressors and battery backups are recommended for use at all times, there is no effective protection against a direct or close by lightning strike. The best protection is to unplug the electronic equipment during thunderstorms.

  3. Anything that is plugged in can get fried from lightning, even if it isn't on.  Surge protectors help some, but nothing can keep your electronics completely safe in an electrical storm.  A direct lightning strike can give a much bigger jolt than anything can protect against, except for unplugging them completely.  Some surge protectors can be reset.  Did you try this?  Could it be that the surge protector alone got fried, thus protecting the computer?  Have you tried plugging the computer into the wall?  Sorry if you're already tried this, but I don't know what you've done.  It's also possible the surge damaged your electrical wiring in the walls, in which case you'd have to call an electrician to repair it.  But if it did get into the PC, then the whole thing would be fried, not just the power supply.  Check your outlets first with a lamp or something.
