  1. The children would all be genetically the same as each other if mitosis produced the eggs and sperm.  The process of mitosis produces an exact copy of a parent cell.    

    Meiosis, on the other hand, promotes diversity by randomly pairing up different chromosomes.  Further more, crossing over occurs in meiosis, where parts of maternal and paternal chromosomes are combined.  This causes even more genetic diversity.  This is why everyone looks different.


  2. First of all, the children would have twice as many chromosomes as a normal human should have. There would still be the same genetic diversity, but you would have more alleles for each gene.
