Well I have had a spouse die and it was singularly the most painful thing I can ever imagine.

No one can be there for you like a spouse so as cruel at it sounds I would rather lose a best mate and know my spouse would be there to comfort me.

Before my husband cheated on me twice and has made my life a complete misery, I would have said my best mate, but when I am at my lowest, it's my best mate that comes through for me.  Now, I would chose my best mate without hesitation, she deserves life way more than my husband.

sad... I actually thought about this for quite a while..

I'd prefer my best friend to die.. because I know if my best friend died, I'd be losing a best friend. But if my husband died, I'd be losing a lover, a supporter (emotionally/financially), our sons daddy (he's a father), and he's also my other best friend..

So I'd be losing more if I lost my husband- but I'd be losing a lot if I lost either one of them. Good question~

there is no choice really. you would definitely want your spouse to live cause you share much more than friendship with your life partner. as the name suggests your spouse and you  are PARTNERS in EVERYTHING for LIFE...........
