Question:

If every household in the world 'ditched' the television, what effect would it have on greenhouse emissions?

I got rid of my TV around 3 years ago and haven't looked back. There is no question that it is unnecessary and a waste of time. Moreover, with the increasing uptake of plasma TV which use around four times the amount of electricity that analogue sets do, television must be having a significant impact on global carbon emissions.

Obviously it is not a very realistic scenario, but all the same, I would be very interested if anyone could quantify the impact a global withdrawal from this pervasive drug would have on greenhouse emissions.

  1. According to a Business Week Magazine article, there are 1.7 billion

    TV sets worldwide.

    A 19" TV uses about 100 watts.

Say each TV is on for 3 hrs a day.

A power plant produces somewhere between 4000-8000 tons of CO2 per megawatt per year.

So if every TV in the world was turned off for a year, you'd have this:

    ((1 700 000 000 * 100 * 3 * 365) / 1 000 000) * 5000 = 930 750 000 000

930,750,000,000 TONS of CO2 would NOT be sent into the atmosphere.

  2. hey! television  don't  leave any  type  of  gases  which  may  cause  global warming or green house  effect let  me  explain  what  is  green house effect  and  global  warming  the  earth receives  a  large  amount  of  heat  fromm  the  sun  and  some  of  the  absorbed  heat is  reflected back  to  the  space  A  large  amount of  carbondioide  along  with  methane  watervapour  nitrous oxide, ozone  are  pesent  in the atmospheric air

These  gases act  like  a glass  and  allow  the  sun  energy  to  reach  the  earth , filtering  dangerous  radiations

they  prevent  reflections  of het  back  into  space

Due  to this  the  temperature of  earth  increases  and  this  gases  act  like  an  insulating  blanket  keeping  the  earth  warm  this  effect  is  called  green  house  effect

Lets now  move  on to  global warming

The  green  house  gases  like  carbondioxide , watervapour, nitrous oxide  & ozone  when  present  in  the  right  proportion  in  the  atmosphere  are  beneficial  to  life  .

A  disturbance or  increase  in any  of  these  gases due  to pollution  and  othervvfactor  can  causewarming  of  the  atmostsphere called  global warming

I  don't  think  ditching  t.v's  can  help  but  it  can  help  in load  sheding  at  some  extinct  and  the  whole  world  won't  do  and  even '' you  are  wasting  much  electricity  by  using  the  computer  ''
