If every single vehicle in the US were 100% electric.....?

Would we still have to import any oil or would our domestic production be enough to cover our non-gasoline oil needs.

One of the following would happen.

The extension cords would get tangled if we didn't use big batteries and big batteries would become depleted at the most inconvenient times. Tow trucks use a lot of oil.

100%  electric rules out hybrids, plug hybrids and ethanol which is our quickest partial solution.

Fuel cells are probably the finale solution with the car being totally electric. Hydrogen stations could recharge the fuel cell with hydrogen and at that point we would not need forign oil.

All we have to do is use plug hybrid or fuel cell vehicles and double the use of coal fired boilers.

Electric cars are not supplanting liquid fuel cars, because they are less efficient.  They only way electric cars could reduce imported oil, is if the electricity was produced by non-fossil fuel plants, such as nuclear.

We could not go completely electric because I do not think the technowledgy is there expecially for long haul truck and heavy vehicles.  Those would probably still have to use gas... such as semi-trucks.  

The military would also have to us gasoline for heavy vehicles so would the aviation industry.  

If all cars were electric though, I think that would be enough to get us off of imported oil, atleast enough for us to not have to rely on Middle East oil, maybe some imports from other countries, like the UK.

We do not have the electricity to put all cars on the grid! Plug in cars are not around the corner for most people. Batteries are very costly. We need to go to coal gassification, solar, nuke and hydro elect-generation, bio fuels, ethane and methane fuels, pollution surcharge, and clean up our atmosphere. Check out CoolingEarth.org

I think we'd still need to import oil....for the sheer fact that our electrical plants are often fueled by oil sources.  I am a proponent of electric/hybrid vehicles, but I feel we still need to come up with alternative fuel sources....as well as look at improving our use of nuclear energy.  Need for oil just isn't going to go away easily, and we need to make serious investments in technology.  Yeah, I hate the fact that we are destroying our earth....but I hate even more giving our money to the stinking terrorists and whackos in the middle east.
