then why aren't there more people out there w/ eating disorders??

and I mean...

It's like an untalked about fact that being thin & looking good has become such an important staple in our society today! People kill themselves w/ exercise, diet, spend tons of money on makeup and clothes and then...

you act suprised when you see someone w/ an eating disorder such as anorexia/bulemia...

and you tell them that there weight shouldn't matter and that they should just eat more....but it's been ingrained in them to think/feel/and act this way.....

it's such a contradiction!

what do you guys think?

  1. People are shocked because an eating disorder is a pretty severe mental problem! I hope we never get to the point in America where any mental problem is not looked at with some shock. Also most people don't have these problems for the same reason most people aren't depressed, despite the saturation of cable news...because the brain is a wonderful organ and takes a lot to s***w up!

  2. Well... this is the end result of a society that is molded by their media. You can also say the same thing for custom... in certain African villages... the more weight you have the prettier you are.

For me - health is a beautiful thing.

  3. I think people want to think being thin is healthy and such, but thankfully there are many people with high self esteem who do not buy into it. Do you not realize that many of those models have their pictures airbrushed or corrected on a photo program to look as thin as they are, it is not reality. Not everyone is stuck on being thin, or wearing make up to attempt to look a certain way. Here's a surprise, not all models are straw thin, nor would many want to be. It is the men who produce the ads who want them to appear this way because this is what they THINK men want. If you learn to read the hidden messages in an ad, you would probably laugh yourself silly. Healthy people are not ingrained to do everything to be "thin", its those who have little self esteem and those who fall prey to the male dominated advertising world.

  4. OK there is a very very large leap between having the best body you can and not eating or throwing up. in order to see this the way i do you must look at it in a simple but complex way. think about nature for instance. ok? your the very healthy attractive skinny person because you are active and you work very hard to survive. now suppose your in nature and the only reason your not fat is because you don't eat! who will survive the guy who is working hard(exercising) consuming a perfectly balanced meal for his output (thousands of calories) and looking good while at it(carry on the gene) or the one who dosent eat and thinks that a body can funtion without the food and the execise?

    i think you can guess.

as humans we aint nothing but mammals and we require the same things that other mammals require.

    1. we are in fact warm blooded.

    what dose that mean?

it means that we require a very large percentage of our food just to replace all that heat that we must have to survive.

    2. energy input must be equal to energy output. too much input and your fat. too little and your body starts eating your organs and you die. and dieng from starvation is a h**l of a lot more painful than dieng from being fat.

    3. our bodys fight for survival every day and it needs nutrition for that. give it what it needs and you will live a longer happier life.

**** the media, **** vouge, and **** all those other cosmo magazines the olny way to go is in the way nature intended but wrap it around the "human element" because i must admit we are a little more brainy than nature intended. dont let your freedom from instincts let you choose not to eat its a very bad idea and you wont live the way god intended you to.

  5. Because what is "important" to people is relative. You may believe that "looking good" and "being thin" is important...other people believe otherwise. Just because you believe something, it doesn't make it the truth for everyone....only you.

Thus, the eating disorders and other obsessive behaviors

  6. I totally agree with you. It's a major contradiction but unfortunately that's the way our society is.

  7. The only time people look bad is when they are trying to look a different way than they are. For example, if someone tries to wear cloths designed for someone much thinner, it might not look good. Cloths can be styled for all body types. (Unfortunately, much clothing today is designed for the thin, even if it comes in larger sizes.) That's why we think that thin is best. It isn't really. Any weight that is basically healthy is just fine & is beautiful with the right clothing.

  8. Eating disorders go both ways.  Obese people often have eating disorders too but they are looked at as just fat and lazy.  If a person is extremely thin they are looked at as sick, if they are thin in any way naturally, they are accused of having an eating disorder.  People put way to much pressure on looks.

  9. I have no idea. But eating disorders require discipline! When I was overweight I used to wonder why the heck I couldn't be anorexic and stop eating so much! But I loved food, couldn't stop... Anorexic people can control their cravings (a little too well).

  10. i think that people should really eat better our society has alot of places like McDonald and other places that just make it worse but looking good has nothing to do with it i mean Canada has just the same food as we do yet not as much obese people and i personally hate makeup am 17 and 139 pounds i can eat whatever i want and not gain weight but still i don't eat unhealthy because i like being a skinny little thing sorry if this is is not what you where looking for

  11. I am thin and no matter what I eat I can't gain wight.

So I never suprise when I see some one eating disorder.

  12. everything should be in the right proportion. anorexia and bulimia is a disorder. you may be thin or fat but undernourished or malnourished. i think people underestimate the meaning of nutrition. they all base it on the physical attribute of a person which will get you nowhere.

  13. duh

    society in general is f*cked

  14. welcome to america. the standards today are rediculous. if someone is thin, they're automatically anoretic and if someone has thighs then they're chubby. the important thing is being healthy. and a lot more people have eating disorders than you think. being anoretic/bulimic isn't the only eating disorder out there.

  15. Anorexia and Bulllemia are not always about looking thin that is just the outside symptom that others see....it can be about a wrongly programmed will that is very strong and they take it out on food, as though it is the threat, when the usual issue is control.

There is also a lie out there that "I am my body" when we are Spirit, Soul and Body and we put, again, too much emphasis on the parts we an see...the body.

Also, Western society, we do rightly distrust obese people, because it is again, an outside symptom that we are out of control in some way, and use eating as comfort and laziness as a way to ignore the pain we are in.

So that's my point of view.

    Mel
