  1. Absolutely not. If the server provided poor service, I don't want them to be rewarded with a tip. Tips should be stictly earned not automaticaly included in the bill.

  2. If it was automatically charged, then I wouldn't really consider it a "tip", but rather a service charge.

I normally tip at least 15%, and often more, if I think the server earned it by providing good service.    On the other hand, I have on a couple of occasions, been dissatisfied with the service, and tipped less -- and in one occasion, it was so bad I did not tip at all and instead complained to the manager, because I was being ignored when I would try to get her attention, including waiting 20 minutes just to get my bill so that I could pay it and get back to work.

So I think the amount of tip should be at the discretion of the customer based on his or her satisfaction in the service.    The customer, too, should not have unreasonable expectations either, just to avoid paying a tip.

  3. Everyone is right.  Tipping should be based on service.

My drink needs to be full at all times & I need to be asked if I need anything every once in a while.  A smile wouldn't hurt, as well.

  4. what tipping dilemma?

and i don't think it would solve anything- to start with, most people don't tip 18%, so they wouldn't be in favor of a law saying they have to tip more.

  5. I've worked in the business for years and I am telling you that it would never work.  If servers knew their tip was included, they wouldn't work hard to give good service.  People just need to reward good service with appropriate tips!

  6. no....everyone starts at 20% with me and work their way up or down from there....not everyone deserves even 18%

  7. No, it would skew the value and most service staff would be worse off, and the service industry would begin to act like Parisian waiters (rude).

  8. no, becasue if people where charged 18% then the waiter or whom every the money is going to would not try to work for the money. if i get some one who get the order wrong and has and attitude then they will get nothing period.! if i like the job they do then 15% if i love it then 20%.

just making every give 18% is stupid.

  9. i would agree, except there are cases where you get unbelievably bad service. I would really resent 18 percent in those cases.

the rest of the time, it sounds pretty good.

  10. Whatever happened to tipping on service?  You know, my tip reflects the service I received.  Anyone can throw food in front of you but the server is the most visible representative of the restaurant you're patronizing.  I personally resent pooled tips or included tips, because there's no impetus to work hard there.  Personally, I think servers should be paid a fair wage in the first place.

  11. if they were going to do that then they should just reflect the tip in the menu item price..

and btw, if they did that I would probably stop eating out..  I like to tip well for good service b/c I feel like I am showing my gratitude for a job well done.. if I were forced to tip a certain amount regardless of the level of service I would resent it..

however, on a side note, my fiance loves when a check comes and has suggested tipping levels with the math already done for you - usually it will show 15%, 18% and 20%
