In other words, what happens to the menstrual cycle?

  1. It is turned off, under hormone control, until a few weeks after birth.


  2. The hormones involved carry on maintaining the uterus lining so that the follicle and develop. So when it is fertilised the follicle carries on stimulating progesterone production, no shedding of the uterus, so no period happens (no period till the birth of the baby!)

  4. Menstruation is your body shedding the 'protective wall' that holds and secures the growing baby. If there is no fertilisation, then the wall sheds until the following month until it grows again in preparation for any fertilisation.

    If you do conceive, the wall does not shed because the egg implants and looks after the growing baby, so stays there.
