If gas price is going up then why are car makers keep on making bigger engine?

I find it weird especially the 2.4 L engine always stay the same but the V6 engine always get bigger

  1. b/c that's what people buy.  that's always what people bought.  let's face it.  in 1990 when Ford introduced the explorer, they also made the escort that got 40 mpg... noone made the american buyers convert to the SUV and make the Explorer the top selling passenger car for years, they had other choices, they just didn't chose to take them.
