  1. I have commuted by bicycle to four different job.  Current job requires me to commute thru a very unsafe city.  For me bicycle commuting is out of the question.

Vast majority of roads are not even remotely safe for a bicyclist.  We as a society were more concerned on safe road for automobiles.  Now, seemingly overnight, gas has shot up to record high with no end in sight.  There is provisions in our infrastructure for bicycles.  I am talking about a shoulder wider than two inches.  I am talking about attitude toward bicyclists.  Vast majority of drivers regard bike as a huge inconvenience.  But vast majority of drivers are not defensive drivers.  I hope gas does indeed go to $6 a gallon.  It seems the only way for people to look at other means of transportation.

I do predict this will be the year of motorcycle, scooters, bicycles, and walking.  People need to quit complaining and be responsible.

PS, I will always need a car.  Winters here in the Chicagoland area can be pretty long.

  2. People would make bicycles like cars you pedal it yourself. when it hits the market , ill buy one.

  3. Indeed! I'm Very willing and able to ride a bicycle to work! A couple of years back, i used to have a car but due to me being a natural born cheapskate...i sold it and bought a Mountain Bike. I rode that thing for about 3 straight years. Then I found a job that really requires me to commute about 50 miles roundtrip so i kept my MTB then I bought a brand new 600cc 1998 Honda F3 Sportbike.I traded that MTB for a Dahon Folding bicycle to which a ride it every now & Then around town and when i get tired, i just fold the dahon Bike Then board a Bus (amazingly they allow this bikes because it's about the size of a standard suitcase when folded!). Right now as we speak, gas should be in the $4.00 per gallon by now and i usually spend about $80.00 A MONTH of gasoline & because it's a motorcycle, i get to cross any bridge in the bay-area TOLL-FREE. And in the event when gasoline hits $6.00/gallon...I can still afford it! People Listen Up: everyone knows that the price of gas will never will be the way it used to be, so if i were you...i'll get a scooter OR a motorcycle! The Future of transportation isn't Fossil-fueled powered cars anymore due to the price of gas...it's electric powered. Hybrid Or 2 wheeled Vehicles. As we all know, Gasoline is a Non-renewable energy because when it's all used and gone...IT'S GONE!!!

  4. I have since 1993, and it's $1.20 a litre in Toronto--works out to over $5 per Imperial gallon.

  5. I have once in a while. The real question is when are companies going to build a bike than isnt embarrassing to ride to work.

  6. policedu is wrong! Sweet crude oil is a commodity and is sold and traded on the stock market along with pork bellies, orange juice, Gold and silver! The stock market was stagnant for a long time and hovering around 10,000 and traders weren't making money so they started trading and pumping money into sweet crude and it took off for a time which made a spike in fuel prices and then in panic buying it took off and hasn't stopped since! If you don't believe me just go back about three years and investigate it for yourself! I am a devout republican and I believe Bush had something to do with it! You can't believe or trust the rich at all!

  7. Sure, I can see me and two kids leaving the house at 6 a.m. for a 15 mile commute on a bicycle in two feet of snow.

Now that makes perfect sense, why didn't I think of that before?

It isn't feasible for rural states to do this and still have a job. I could get a horse easier, but with the cost of hay these days, gas is still cheaper.

  8. first of all to let everyone know it wasn't bush's fault it was OPEC's fault as they were the one's raising the gas prices  and second of all it isn't bush buying the gas it in congress.  also no i would not ride a bike as i would go with a hybrid car

  9. This is an interesting question because most of America commutes to work and a bicycle is not a practical/feasible form of transportation. This country's infrastructure was designed with cheap fuel in mind. Now that energy is at an all time high, and is expected to go even higher as demand grows and supply shrinks (see the documentary "A Crude Awakening") we find ourselves in a collective predicament which affects every single social, economic, and  political class. Would it not be a wonderfully profound statement if we could sustain this infrastructure with the simplicity of riding a bicycle to work - winter sure would be fun!

  10. Either I change my job or I move near work.

No, I would not ride a bike to work and being smelly all day, unless I was a construction worker or a swimming instructor.

  11. As noble as your suggestion is, and there are many countries where bicycle is a major mode of transportation: can you imagine yourself riding bike on a 4-6 lane highway with some trucks and cars passing by at a very high speed?

Out lifestyle and daily routines are based on driving cars. We will have to slowly move towards the transportation style you suggested, so it allows transition. Otherwise it will be a big jolt. It would be difficult to imagine the consequences.

Regardless the gasoline prices go below $1/- or $0.50, we need to change to accommodate less dependency on any kind of energy source, especially petrolium.

  12. it depends upon the work place we go to work
