Ghosts try to mimic their own human movements as much as possible. So, they will often walk down stairs for instance just like they used to. They often walk through doorways just like us too. Floating and running through walls is more of a myth. = )

This is funny but I'll answer seriously anyway.

Many ghosts were alive when things were physically and geographically different. When they travel they see things how they were when they were here physically, so where we now have a wall they don't see OUR wall, they see things the way they were before we came along and changed it.

That's why you'll hear stories of angry ghosts who taunt people who move into a house, because the presence of your spirit is bothering them in their 'home.' You are a stranger to them and while they believe that everything around them is as it was before their death they can sense the presence of a new person or spirit, sometimes they get mad at the change, sometimes they welcome it.

What I can't figure is if ghosts are real and as insubstantial as all that, why don't people just open the windows?  The first breeze to come along should blow the spooks right out the opposite window...

They walk on the floor that was there when they were alive. I don't know what would happen to a spook on a ship when it sinks, do they keep walking the decks forty fathom down? and what happens when the deck rots away?
