  1. St. Maarten because Maui has too many AmeriKans who think they are going to a foreign country where they can talk AmeriKan.

Plus... I LIVE in the Caribbean for about 7 months a year

  2. That's a tough call, because both are great.  Personally, I think I'd choose St. Maarten, but that's only because I've been to Maui three times and I've only been to St. Maarten once, and that was just a brief stop on a trip to the neighboring islands, so I'd like to see more of it.  Both have beautiful beaches and colorful towns.  Maui's Lahaina still has some of the look and feel of the whaling town it once was, while Philipsburg and Marigot have a distinctively European flavor (Dutch and French, respectively -- I especially liked Marigot).

Maui has a fantastic aquarium (the Maui Ocean Center) and lots of other activities, including luaus, submarine rides, bicycling down Haleakala (the dormant volcano), live music, etc.  I'm not as familiar with the activities on St. Maarten, but I know it has casinos and good Caribbean-style food.

The best time to visit St. Maarten is any time other than hurricane season (July through October), and any time is a good time to go to Maui.  That could help you decide.  If hurricane season is the most convenient time to get away, Maui is much less likely to be hit by storms.  Otherwise, I think I'd choose based on which has the lower airfare at the time.  You can't go wrong with either one.
