  1. The name originated in the city of Hamburg, Germany.  "Hamburg Steaks" was a European dish in the 19th century.  Countless of European immigrants brought the name and the dish to the U.S.

In 1885, Charlie Nagreen of Seymour, Wisconsin, made the first true hamburger at the Seymour Fair.  He was selling meatballs from a booth at the fair.  He decided to flatten the meatballs and put them between slices of bread to make it easier for his customers to carry with them.  "Hamburger" Charlie is believed to be the originator of the modern hamburger.

  2. Well if they call it beefburger, it wouldn't sound very appetizing, right? Actually, I really can't explain it but here's a website that tells you why they call it a hamburger when there's no ham but instead, it's made of beef:

  3. One of my first jobs was as a burger flipper at Wendy's and they actually fired me because I called them "cowburgers" within earshot of the customers. Not really an answer, but an interesting story.

  4. Many say they are a descendant of a minced meat called the Hamburgh Steak, brought over by a cook from Germany.  Some go with the theory that they were named after Hamburg, NY.

Truthfully, no one can be quite sure where they originated...but there are a ton of theories!

  5. They're named after their place of origin, Hamburg, Germany.
