Question:

If homeschooling is banned in California, does that include homework?

If parents can no longer teach their children, then homework will have to be eliminated since there will be no one at home "qualified" to help the children with it. Any assistance could be construed as teaching and therefore illegal.

I have to work so my child and I arrive home at 6pm and have only ONE HOUR as a family before he has to start his bedtime routine at 7pm (bath, hygeine, pjs, nightly reading, then lights out by 8pm to get up at 6am each morning). I thoroughly despise having any of my tiny time with my son wasted on outside work. Family time is family time. I don't take work home and waste family time on it, I expect the same consideration.

So now that school at home will be outlawed, does this mean ALL schooling, including homework?

  1. Haha, good one!

Fear not, homeschooling is still alive and will continue to remain alive in California. And if they ever did somehow manage to outlaw it, they'd have a provision in there for public schools to allow any homework they see fit to be sent home. Of course, a lot of teachers would say that the kids are supposed to be doing their homework on their own, but sooo many kids need help because they don't get the help they need in class.

  2. Well, homeschooling hasn't been banned, so there goes your argument. If you have a problem with homework, talk to the teacher. I used to get really frustrated with all the work that the teacher would send home. If her pupils acted up, and she couldn't teach, she would just send it home for the parents to teach.  Whatever. That's when I figured out that I could just homeschool, if they are expecting me to do all this anyway. lol!

Anyway, this is preaching to the choir, but read here

  3. Homework is only meant to re-enforce what is already learned.  Any assistance should be very minimal (a reminder to read the directions carefully).  If you're having to do more than that or if your child has more than an hour's worth at any time, you should speak to his teachers.   Your son will only be given more homework as he gets older.  It's a part of the school experience and helps children to be responsible and manage their time properly- among other things.

As for the amount of time you have to accomplish all you need to do, I truly do sympathize.  Can you speak to his after-school program or sitter about having him do it there?  I can't imagine anyone refusing that request.  In fact, homework time is incorporated into most programs here.

Sadly, homework will not be illegal- much to the dismay of children everywhere and families like yours and mine.  Best wishes.

  4. Ha ha ha ha!!

Funny.  It would be nice if homework would be banned.

  5. You are so intelligent!  I forgot all about "homework" that robbed us of valuable family time each night.  With 5 kids who all needed some form of help with their homework it was so stressful.  Now to think that I wasn't even capable of helping them with it... wow.   The idiot lawmakers have really put themselves in a pickle.    Homeschooling cannot be banned anywhere until there is but one world order and we all turn to mindless robots with no freedoms.

  6. Gee, I don't know about that one.  Of course, homeschooling isn't, nor is it going to be, banned in California.

OTOH, we don't do homework in our house.  <g>

  7. No

  8. Doubtful.

But it's a funny way to think about it!

Besides, as others have already mentioned:  Home-schooling is alive and well in California.

Banning it would make tens of thousands of really GOOD people into "criminals".   Ain't it the stupidest durn thang yer evah heerd!

  9. Darn, sorry!  Homeschooling is alive and well in CA...it'd be nice if homework wasn't though :-)

I lived in SoCal when my son was in school, I do remember that schedule.  I was feeling lucky when I got to see him for an hour!  I can remember dropping him off at school before his eyes were fully open in the morning, and picking him up with time to run through the drive thru and read a book before bed.

  10. Homeschooling has not been banned in California, and it is unlikely is will anytime in the near future.

    Don't worry :D

  11. Homeschooling is NOT banned in California.   The court ruling has been vacated and the case is being heard again.
