Question: If humans are causing Global Warming, who/what caused The Little Ice Age?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Ice_Age

The Little Ice Age (LIA) was a period of cooling occurring after a warmer era known as the Medieval climate optimum. Climatologists and historians find it difficult to agree on either the start or end dates of this period. Some confine the Little Ice Age to approximately the 16th century to the mid 19th century. It is generally agreed that there were three minima, beginning about 1650, about 1770, and 1850, each separated by slight warming intervals.

In the North Atlantic, sediments accumulated since the end of the last ice age, nearly 12,000 years ago, show regular increases in the amount of coarse sediment grains deposited from icebergs melting in the now open ocean, indicating a series of 1-2°C(2-4°F) cooling events recurring every 1,500 years or so.

  1. I THINK JESUS

  2. Who gives a !@$#@$#@$#.  The issue here is we have billions of people on this planet and we are all taking a c**p in the water and land we live and drink from. Gawd...get a Clue.  If you take a dump in your bathtub, you going to go swim in it?

  3. I believe that intense volcanic activity put more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

Those changes were much slower than we are currently experiencing.  We are currently seeing rapid changes that were unseen but predicted 40 years ago.

The idiots who cite Al Gore do not understand the history of tracking human caused global warming.  I was reading about in college in 1979, probably before Gore was aware of it.  It just took someone like Gore to get it from scientific journals into mainstream news.

  4. Variations in the Sun's output.  I wrote an explanation of natural causes of climate change on Earth and how we know the current global warming is different at the link below.  Check it out.

  5. First of all during the Ice age, it was caused by massive volcanic actions as if if the earth was still primordial that time and forming continents over continents and through time, the CO2 accumulated on the atmosphere gradually decreasing the temperature to a point that ice are formed everywhere, and during the medieval era, part of Indonesia is a volcano named Mt. Krakatoa, erupted, that it also disrupts the atmospherical temperature it even erupts some other time in the 20th century and the US even felt that when they call it the COLD Summer, basically the ice age would tend to lower down the temperature to again a point of forming ice everywhere and during the Ice age, neither human nor vehicles are the ones that caused this, its mother natures work, it was just aggravated now because the polar ice caps are melting away, its a million years process before we can put back Mother Earth to what it  was before, you can do your share, plant trees, ride bicycles,

  6. little ice age occurred naturally, and global warming is occurring naturally, humans arent causing global warming

  7. The Little Ice Age was most likely caused by a combination of natural factors such as changes on the sun, volcanic activity, etc.

Current global warming is too rapid to be explained by such factors.

  8. I think it has been established that natural causes cause cooling and co2 causes warming.

This current cold is caused by a La Nina.  But El Ninos play no role in warming.

What caused the LIA?  The best guess is the sun.  It was observed during this period the sun had no sun spots indicating a period of low sun activity.

  9. jesus

    duh

  10. warming the earth is much harder than cooling it.. it depends on the amount of energy in the atmosphere. humans=a lot of energy.. which produces heat.. the little ice age was natural probly due to the position of the earth

  11. The earth changed postiton on its axis causing it to cool a little

  12. El nino..Humans do not cause "global warming" we are not responsible for the sun shining, rain falling, snow showers..Spring Summer autumn winter etc. it has nothing to do with us.

  13. Judging by your post, you probably already know quite a bit about it.  I'm sure you know there are 5 or 6 theories as to a cause.  I think the Medieval Warming Period and the Little Ice Age are related.  I favor the redirection of ocean currents, or "large-scale ocean current conveyor belt",  as the cause of both.  I've heard two scenario's, the blockage of key currents by ice floes obstructing major straits, or changes in salinity related to melting ice caps.  Of the two I prefer the ice floes.  The North Polar cap was larger than today during both events, but melting slowly as it was up until a few years ago.  It didn't extend far enough south to affect Europe directly, but plenty far enough to redirect ocean currents.  Because of the large scale connectivity of these currents all the way around the earth, this would produces changes in weather similar to the El Nino/La Nina cycle today, affecting weather far inland.

One thing I like about this theory is that (1) It explains both events (volcanoes, meteor strikes etc don't do this); (2) It allows for warming in widely separated areas (which we find) without requiring the planet as a whole to experience warming  (which we do not find); (3) It is compatible with the size of the polar cap as we know them to have been during those times; (4) The north atlantic currents are known to have been in exactly the appropriate places during the MWP, LIA, and now; (5) It doesn't require the planet as a whole to be warmer than it is now for no apparent reason and without much evidence  (versus regional heating/cooling).

  14. It was caused by a time of lessened solar output called the Mauder Minimum (theoretically).

It happened during a time of little sun spot activity.

Less solar output is associated with times of less sunspot activity. It is a complex relationship.

  15. We were learning about this in science today.  The thing is that global warming is not being caused BY humans.  Its happening naturally.  The fact that humans use so much technology and other products that are wasteful for the environment is only speeding up the process. I don't really know much about the little ice age but hopefully this helped out a bit!!

  16. First of all, humans aren't the whole reason why there is global warming, its part of the earths cycle. You can't always think that humans are the blame for everything. Second, the little ice age was caused by warmer climate developing.

  17. just weather habits.  its always up and down.  theres expected to be another mini one in europe eventually.

  18. Evil multinational corporations, rich white conservative males and Amerikkka!

  19. Everyone knows that medi-evil peasants caused it

  20. Global warming is not true. This was made up by Gore.
