If humans could get into outer space easily would different people head in different directions?

By into space easily I mean off the earth and have the ability to travel to other planets as easily as (most) people can walk. Also it would have to cheep so that any social grouping could chose to do so if they wanted.

I'm guessing it would need to take some time to get to say a new planet for any effects to be noticiable, so I'll have to state no jumping point to point through artifical worm-holes.

I'm interested in the predicated reasons/evidence for the behavour.

  1. Your question is like 2000 years ahead of what we can do technically speaking and at least 200 years ahead of what we may need to do to survived...

So, I am sorry if I can't really respond to such answer at this time... My friends tell about me that I am kind of a visionaire, but I don't dream or smoke that much...

  2. Space travel and colonisation would result in a form of eugenics. Only skilled specialists would be sent in the earlier missions, to be followed up by less skilled trades, artisans and the like. Because the cost of travel would be huge, there would be no transporting of unemployed lazy types or those with no skills or education.

Colonies would evolve to be more elitist than the general culture back on earth.

I would imagine that this would eventually result in a sense of superiority amongst the colonies, particularly if their survival requires them to master technology while the people on earth have no such worries and are left behind technology wise.

  3. I would stay on earth to enjoy it wheneveryone took off,, you are not going to find the beautiful sunset's here and beache's  mountain's under water cave's stars you name it we have got it......

  4. Extrapolating from what had happened in the past, the follower of new religion, political view, utopianist (in short new memeticity) will try to find a planet for themselves.

In the first time, some of them will be isolationist, but some of them will be friendly to outsider. The one friendly to outsider will have rich culture, developing industry and trading.

Once the industry have developed to the point that they need material from somewhere else, and some trader seek some new market, they will begin to trade with other planet.

Some will even try to extract material from isolationist planets and trade with the inhabitant. Because of their isolationist memeticity there will be some kind memetic pressure on the isolationist society, with some part of the inhabitant accepting industry and trading while the other stand on their inherited faith.

If there is some part of the society which want to accept this new industry and trade brought by more developed worlds. The one accepting industry and trading will soon prosper and gain more political power. There will be some kind of memetic degradation in the younger generation, due to the natural instict of any living being to survive and prosper. Most younger generation will choose the memeticities that they see will bring prosperity to their family and slowly discarding their old way of life.

The one still holding their inherited faith is also important to the future of the said civilisation. If the society become too ignorant and oppresive, some of the marginalized member of the society can become terrorists and break the order of the society.

If they are permissive and dont want to lose their identity, they will use some of the gained wealth to build some kind of reserve so the one choosing old way of life can still survive.

After a long time there will be new memetic groups, seeking new planet for their home. The direction of expansion for the follower of memetic which a memetic group is suffering allergy of, will be undesireable for a memetic group, and so there will be myth in some memetic group that certain direction in the galaxy is considered taboo.

  5. You should remember the past explorations of our planet.  In most cases the journey resulted in loss of life, hardship due to inferior vessels, and these were the lucky that returned to

tell the tale.  The crossings at sub-light will require resources

    beyond present ability to provide.

This writer would hazard a guess that the crossings will occur within tunneled comets or asteroids (for their water and mineral resources), with solar sails and optional ion jet steering, and  that passage will consume the lifetime of several generations.

The outbound crew would be small aboard a body that must provide for them and their kind for several hundred years.

Most of the passage would be spent mining and processing

for future use upon destination arrival.

Miners today are a tight knit community managed by slick money managers so it is likely this pattern will repeat itself for space flight.  One should consider their troubled history while thinking of a long shared transit and it is possible more than one expensive suit after several years of sweatshop direction will pass out an airlock much earlier than their Earth Office had scheduled.

The mining agenda might then assume the social mantle

of Old West boom towns where law was dispensed not by

civilization but rather the assembled will and talents of those

thrust beyond the edge of known envelope.  This is not a bad thing considering the next landfall is likely to be their next frontier.  It is likely the next civilization will begin anew as an assembly of Trade Unionists preaching to the host about the evils of Capitalism.

  6. Possibly. People would, naturally head towards planets with landscapes, features and climes similar to that of their own homelands on earth, or perhaps head for different areas just for the sake of travelling and exploration. That's something for interstellar tourism.
