Officially the Schengen visa should be obtained at the embassy of the country where you will spend the majority of time in, and so this does not have to be the country of entry.  If this is not known then you can apply to the embassy of the country of entry.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_ar...

    So yes you can enter Italy first assuming that Spain is the country where you will spend the majority of time in

    One point to consider though (which are not always known)

    (a) check first on your visa to make sure there are no restrictions, namely that the visa is only for Spain, or that it does not include restructions to visit Italy (this is on the first line of your visa)

    If you are not sure then it is always best to check with the embassy that issued the visa, in advance of travel
