If i am a current Iowa EMT-B but not employed by any ems service yet, can i still respond to calls?

Just got my Iowa EMT-B license but im not employed by any EMS service yet. I have ways of knowing what emergency calls are happening around me but can i provide emergency care?

  1. They should have explained that in your class when you are employed as an EMT-B you are working under the doctor on call of the organization you are employed with, thats why they teach you about getting things approved that are considered ok such as giving ephedrine or gluclose. If you have to ask this question I'm amazed you passed your class! You can do things in emergency situations if you happen to be there but you are creating major legal issues if you are answering calls just from a scanner you will get your certification revoked that way fast!


  2. I wouldn't - the legal and liability issues are complex.

    And, if you get a reputation as a wild card, you'll be unemployable.

      Governments like their employees predictable.
