  1. Well, if it's in a shared drive, they can see that you have music, but they have no way of knowing if it's legal or not without transferring the files, which IS illegal. So basically they have a conundrum, and the I don;t care enough to |#uck with it  factor probably wins... probably. They surely CAN see when you are transferring files.

The truth is, you should NOT SHARE ANYTHING on your schools network if you don't them to know about it. If you have illegal files, park them somewhere that is not readily accessible on the network.

Truth is. The admins probably have enough to worry about, and enough large file transfers taking place that they are not going to go looking for something, unless they have a reson to. If you are moving gigabytes around, knock it off. DO NOT UPLOAD. That is where you start getting in trouble. You download a tune and maybe get caught. you might hace to cough up a few hundred bucks, but that's pizza money. You get caught uploading illegal, pirated, or copyrighted stuff.. probably you get tossed out of school, and if those that might care decide they do... You may never dig yourself out.

You want to be careful with your downloads, but you want to NOT upload at all.

  2. if its a public netowrk where you access without any type of password i.e.(WEP) then the only thing they should see is the fact that you are on the network and not that you are downloading anything. They will only see that you are bogging down the system and they could maybe guess that you are downloading something, but they really couldn't get you on that. You have more of a chance of your Prof. walking by and seeing what you are doing and catching you that way. Hope this helps, (hope you dont get caught)

  3. Don't worry about it... they can't prove it's illegal and just use a firewall...and another thing... everyone does it and they won't waste their time...
