If i buy a DVD recorder can i simply record a show like Dexter to a DVD?

I am hoping to record my favorite NEW shows to DVD and send them to my friends in the hopes of them liking the show also thus increasing the rating so hopefully my favorite shows don't get cancelled. (i.e. The Black Donnelley's and Journeyman)

Can a DVD recorder do this simple task? Is it just as easy as in the old days of popping in a blank VHS tape and hitting record?

I have TIVO and it easily records onto a blank DVD.

Yes it can. You can record episodes to fill up the disc, then when you are done, you will need to finalize the disc so that it will be playable in all DVD players. If you pause the recording at any time say like a commercial or anytime in the show, it will create a chapter than you can skip forward to. Good Luck!
