  1. It should.  The first commercially available DVRs from TiVo worked on cable systems years before the cable company offered DVR set-top boxes.  I got my first TiVo over 8 years ago long before Comcast offered a DVR and worked just fine.

    The DVRs just record the same signal that is displayed on your TV and, in general, have no requirements.

    If your cable company offers Digital TV channels and broadcast HD channels, you will require one or more CableCards from the cable company to be able to tune and record these channels.  This may involve a small monthly fee of several dollars a month.

    I just got my second TiVo HD and it works just fine.
