I had dialup internet for my desktop computer. I just got a laptop and it picks up a wireless network. If i get a router for my desktop computer will it pick up the same signal? i used to have dialup on my computer. If i get a wireless router do i need a wireless card on my computer? How do i check if i have one? Is a wireless router better than a wired one? if so how?

  1. i have one and it is the same just connect the router and see if it works i gaurantee it will .

    [=

  2. Don't get a router, get a wireless card for for your computer and you will get the signal your laptop picks up.  (Probably one of your neighbors)

A router is used only if you have a broadband connection, like a cable or DSL modem, to share the connection with multiple computers in your house, wired or wireless.

  3. you will need a router that is capable of being a wifi client instead of a distributor(they should exist but I'm not sure what brands they would be). using a wireless card in your PC has a better chance of success. the way your saying this I'm getting, is that your stealing a neighbors wifi internet? I'm not gonna harp you about the morality of that but you should not focus your main source of internet on a wifi source that can be password protected at anytime by the owner. i find it hard to understand what questions your asking as your kinda jumping all over the place, email me to ask more specific questions and ill try to help you.

  4. you need a wireless card for your desktop to pick a wireless network not a router

  5. Your typical home/office (SOHO) router takes a broadband internet connection, such as DSL or Cable, and provides that connection to multiple computers on the home network.  These computers can be wired or wireless.  Wired computers should be located near the router.  Dial-up connections are typically not suited for routing through a home network.

What you are referring to as a "router for your desktop" is called a Wireless Bridge, and yes, it would pick up the signal and allow you to connect a wired device (your desktop computer) to it.  Off-the-shelf routers do not generally have bridge functionality out of the box.

Using a wireless bridge to connect to someone else's wireless connection isn't smart.  The person could find out and enable security on their network, and at that point you would have a useless bridge device.  In some places, it is quasi-illegal to steal WiFi.  It is best to provide your own wireless connection to a broadband internet connection by setting up your own router.

  6. no, move to a dsl network and then the router will have a signal for the laptop to pick up

  7. Yeah bassically! Kind of like my mac book and imac. But you need a router for the computer not the laptop!

  8. Well I really wouldn't encourage you to take someone else's wireless connection on a regular basis, because they're liable to find out and start blocking your access to it an you'll be out of all that money you spent.

But basically, if you wanted to steal these people's signal, you would need a wireless adaptor for your desktop. They usually just plug into a USB drive. You wouldn't need a wireless router because that would be used if you were actually paying for a broadband connection, not taking someone else's.

So yeah, a wireless card would give you access to the same connection that your laptop picks up on.

It's kind of stupid though, because if they change it at any point and suddenly you can't connect, you spent money on hardware that you won't be able to use anymore unless you actually start paying for your own service. Unless there are multiple signals.

  9. You need wireless capability for a computer.  If it's not built-in (sounds like it is not), you may be able to use a wireless card.  The same router will work with several computers.

  10. You cannot get a router with Dial up on your comp.  You need to upgrade your comp and get cabel for your internet.  but there is really no point to a router unless you have multiple things to hook up to it.
